so i was recently asked what "design" blogs i subscribe to. this is such an interesting question, mainly because i currently subscribe to 79 different blogs. but since i don't really want to list out all of the blogs that i subscribe to (including links), i decided to add a new section to the right side of my blog called "some inspiration". it is a short (really short) list of some of my favorite blogs to go to for inspiration.

laptop woes

so for about 4 years now i have owned my G4 PowerBook. it was a great laptop through college. even after i graduated it worked for doing freelance work. over the last year it has been going down hill. when Adobe released CS3 and i got the opportunity to install it, my laptop finally started showing its age. CS3 made my laptop run really slow when trying to work in Photoshop or code a site, especially when more than 2 programs were open at the same time. about 2 weeks ago the good old laptop finally had a major issue... the battery died. i didn't notice it at first because pretty much 90% of the time i use it i have an outlet nearby and i keep it plugged in. but then one day i had the need to actually use my laptop as a portable computer. imagine how surprised i was when i tried to turn it on and nothing happened. when i got home and had a chance to plug it in the thing booted up like nothing was wrong. the charge indicator on the charger plug was green and i thought maybe something weird just happened earlier. but after booting up i noticed that the battery indicator in the menu bar said i had 0% charge. i searched the web trying to find a solution for my trouble. i found a few places with tips to get the battery working again (if it wasn't completely dead) so i tried these out. no dice. none of the tips did any good. so i now currently have a laptop that doesn't work as a laptop. new batteries run anywhere from $80 (at a site i've never heard of) to $120 (at Apples' online store). i have been trying to decide if it is worth getting a new battery or to just wait until i can afford a completely new laptop.

today the decision got harder...

the new MackBook Pro is the coolest laptop i have seen and the graphics card enhancements alone make it worth getting. the only problem now is coming up with the $2500 + that it will take to get a hold of one of these.

well i haven't updated my blog since January and apparently some people don't appreciate that [Heather]. so here is a little update on things.

last November [10.13.07] i got married to the most wonderful woman in the world - Joanna. there i put it up on my blog.

in May [05.08] of this year i took a family trip to Disneyland. Jo and i went with my Ma my bro Dave and his wife Stephanie and S's bro Paul and his wife Carri. great trip, Disney is always fun.

not much else has been going on in my life for the past year. i just go to work [yawn] and chill out at home. i have been playing softball this fall on Monday nights. that has been really fun.

if anything exciting happens i will make sure to post about it so that people [Heather] will be able to stay up to date.

here at FORTHGEAR one of our clients, SinoSource, sells urns. each year the print team here puts together the catalog of all of their different products. instead of paying to hire professional models for their photo shoot they use employees and their families. this year i got the opportunity to be one of the models. after the catalog shoot was over i found out that one of my photos had been selected for the cover!

so from now on i will be listing "professional hand model" on my resume.

Really Big Announcement

So many of you that actually read this blog probably don't know this, but I have been dating a girl named Joanna for a little over 9 months now. It has been really great and I am in love with her more and more every day.

Well this weekend we took a trip out to Cali so that she could go to Disneyland for the first time. I am a big Disney freak (taught to me by the rest of my Disney freak family) and she is one just as big as me, so I had to take her for her first time.

Anyway, her favorite character is Cinderella so I planned a big surprise dinner where she would get to meet Cinderella and have her picture taken and all of that fun stuff. So at the end of dessert I had an even bigger surprise for her... I proposed! I won't go into all the details or anything, but she did say yes and it was very exciting.

So for all the 4 or 5 people that actually read this blog, I am getting married! We haven't decided on an exact date yet, but I will let you know as soon as we do.

New Do

Last week at work we were talking about haircuts and what people have had before. This got me thinking about my hair style and how it had been the same thing for the last few years.

So this past Sunday i decided I needed a change.

I figured that if I was going to make a change in my hair style I might as well do something really different and exciting. So I went with the Mo-Hawk. I've been doing the popular Faux-hawk for a number of years and this time I finally just went through with it and got the real thing.

So far I'm liking the new look. It took a little it to get used to the shaved sides and back, but I like the way it turned out.

Reading Woes

All of my life I have been a pretty "Geeky" guy. I love "tech" stuff, anime, cartoons, video games, etc. There is a whole list of things that would classify me as a "geek" to most people. This list includs reading fantasy books, like "Lord of the Rings" and "The Wheel of Time". (This doesn't mean that I don't really enjoy other styles of writing, Jack Kerouac is one of my all-time favorite authors). But lately the fantasy books just haven't been able to hold my attention the way that they used to. I still like them, but I used to stay up all night reading just to find out what happened next in my favorite books. Maybe I'm just getting old (but I'm not even 26 yet). Or maybe I just can't focus the way that I used to in my younger days. Whatever it is I don't know, but it would be nice to be able to get so deep into these books again that I lose all track of time then realize that its 5 am, but keep on reading anyway.

So I just joined in on a group blog this past week. It's called My Geek Notes. It was started by one of the programers that my company works with. So far pretty much everyone in the office is getting in on it. It seems like a really cool idea. Everyone that is involved with the admin of the blog can log on and post about whatever kind of "geeky" stuff they want to. Plus as it grows there will be "notes" sections where post about different tutorials, instruction, etc. will be put to help other geeks out.

VW Bus

The VW Bus was, in my opinion, an automotive icon of the late 60s thru the 70s. The design was great inside and out. The rounded front end and roof created great lines that no van since has been able to live up to. And all the options inside were amazing. Not only was it spacious, but most came with a built in sink and fridge. Not to mention the rear bench that folded down into a bed. The interior alone made it one of the most versatile vehicles of its day. In other words it was built for the classic roadtrip.

Ever since I was a little tike I have dreamed of owning one of these classic rides. I have wanted one ever since I saw one for the first time.

On a trip this last Saturday I happened to see one at a car dealership in Syracuse. I didn't have time to stop and look, but I was so excited that I made a promise to myself to go back and check it out as soon as I had the time. The rest of the weekend was spent daydreaming about that Bus I saw. I thought how cool it would be to go in and purchase it, then head out to Cali, park it at the beach, and camp out for a couple of days. I could already see myself driving around in the sweet brown and white Bus everywhere I went.

Last night I had a little time to spare so I headed back over to the dealership. I was so excited the whole way there thinking that I might finally have an opportunity to own somthing that I had dreamed of since I was young. On arriving at the lot, I quickly walked over to the van. On first glance things were looking good, my hopes rose higher. I started looking through the windows thinking how cool I would look driving it around. But then I noticed the bottom of the drivers side. There was a big rust hole glaring back at me. I started to look closer around the entire vehicle, noticing more and more rust holes and spots. With every new spot my hopes fell farther and farther. I started to realize that my hope of finally finding a Bus for sale had clouded my vision of this once great automobile. The entire Bus was in really bad shape from years of neglect. This wouldn't have been a problem if I owned my own house, a plasma cutter, welder, sheet metal tools, a lot of body repair know-how. But I don't have any of this and I'm sure it would cost more than the Bus was worth to have someone else fix it up.

As I took my last stroll around the Bus I slowly walked away without even finding out how much the dealership wanted. I felt a little sad that I hadn't found the car of my childhood dreams lying in the brown and white bus.

I still want a VW Bus. If anyone ever happens to see one for sale, jot down the number to call or the dealer to visit and let me know. I still might go back and have another look at the one I found.

Fun Times

So this weekend I finally got to do some fun/cool design for a change. It's been a long time since I have been able to do something fun (or anything at all) for myself.

A couple of co-workers and I decided to enter the "Design the Modern Board" competition at Design Within Reach out in Denver, Colorado. They are a cool studio full of fashionable home furishings. The competition is also being sponsored by RIDE Snowboards (one of my favorite board companies). The competition is going to be judged by attendies at the show this Thursday March 29th. The winner is going to have their design put on a RIDE board that they will recieve and RIDE may opt to use their design as a production board next season. Also, all procedes from cash donations at the door will benefit Snowboard Outreach Society, whose mission is to provide at-risk youth the opportunity to engage in snowboarding and other recreational activities.

The designs had to be in by Wednesday at 10am so I had to get it done this weekend and mailed off today. After many, many hours of going through 5 or 6 designs over the weekend, I finally came up with the design above late last night. I'm not sure how well it will do in the competition, but I like the way that it turned out for the most part. My only regret is that I won't be able to make it out to Denver to see the show.

Late Night

It's Monday March, 19th 09:13 pm (well at least that's what Blogger says, my clock says 10:25 pm). Once again I am sitting in the office waiting for DVDs to burn so that they can be ready for pickup tomorrow. It is pretty crazy that I have spent so many late nights at work all because of one project. It amazes me how many times a client can come back with revisions. Especially when they are revisions on something that they told you was "absolutely perfect" the last time they came in with revisions. I just don't understand how they can't catch something the first time that they go through the DVDs. It isn't that difficult. Especially when they watch the DVDs over and over and over... But I guess thats why they hire other people to do these kind for things for them.

On a completely separate note.. I was trying to import a new CD onto my computer while waiting for the DVDs to burn, and now the eject button doesn't work on my keyboard.

This is very frustrating after a long day at work.

Reflections on Valentines

So today is February 14th. It is an interesting day. Today is Valentines Day (or Singles Awareness Day depending on your situation). I find this day to be very interesting. It is a day set aside to show people that you love them, especially that "certain someone".

I have never been a big fan of this day. And it's not because I am always alone and feeling resentful. In fact for most of my "adult" life I have had at least a date (if not more) on every Valentines Day. This year I have a date once again with a girl I have seen quite a few times. But if she wasn't into Valentines then it would just be another date as far as I am concerned.

The reason that I have never been a fan is because I don't see why people need a special day to show people that they love them. It has always been my belief that you should show the people that you love your feelings for them as often as possible, even every day if that is an option. And gifts of love shoud not be reserved for one day a year. If you have that "certain someone" in your life that you love then you should be showing up with gifts of love year round. It can be anything from a little note to a special getaway for two. Anything that shows how much you care will work.

3 Weeks Back

So it has been three weeks since I got back from Florida. It wasn't that great coming back to Utah. But theres not much I can do about that right now. It was a little hard getting back into the swing of things. Especially at work.

There hasn't been a lot of good projects going since I got back. I have been able to code a few websites and do some random jobs. And work on a little bit of Flash. But they haven't been to exciting. Plus an insane DVD project has recently come back for the FIFTH round. I started working on it back in November a little before Thanksgiving. I wouldn't mind working on a DVD project (I actually rather enjoy video editing) if it wasn't such a pain. The project was started by the guy that I replaced and he was an idiot. He deleted some of the key files for the project and screwed up some other files that he did save. On top of that I have had to make edits to the content of the DVDs without being able to go back to FInal Cut and edit the original movies. Needless to say I have had a hard time with it from the begining. Well for this round the client came back with a dewsey. He now wants one of the chapters that has been split between two DVDs since the begining to be on one DVD. This wouldn't be to hard, except all of my editing has to be done inside DVD Studio Pro. Pretty crazy I know. The sad part is that none of the time I put into the project is billable now. They only charged the guy $10,000 for the project (6 DVDs total originally). They under estimated the cost by a ton.

But that is enough venting for now I just need to let off some steam once in a while. Don't get the wrong idea though. In reality I really do love my job and working where I do. I have fun every day I go in even if I do work on crapy projects for 8 hours a day sometimes. The only bad part, which is good at the same time, is that I'm on salary. So all the overtime I have to put in to get projects (like the stupid DVDs) done is just free labor for the company. But I think knowing how much I will be bringing home every paycheck makes up for that.

Just Got Back

So it has been a really really long time since I have posted anything to my blog once again. But I have been extremely busy at work (which is the only place that I have the internet). I was working 70 hour weeks through December which kept me from doing a whole lot at all. Plus I just got back yesterday from a trip to Disney World down in sunny Florida for the last week. It was great, mostly sunny and 80's. I really didn't want to come back to the freezing weather here in Utah. I wish that I could have just stayed down there. It would have been nice. Expect a few pics to show up on here next week, and a lot to show up on my Flickr account.

Other than working a lot and going to Florida things hae been pretty calm for me lately. Hopefully it will get more exciting soon.

Updating

So it has been a while since I posted anything to the old blog. So I figured that since I have a minute during my lunch break I would come up with something. I'm half way through my 4th week of work. So far things are going really well. I love working at FORTHGEAR and the people here are great. I'm still trying to get up to speed with everything that I have to do, but I am getting there. They have actually had me doing Power Point presentations which is something that I never thought I would have to do. But its cool cause they are easy for the most part. Other than work I haven't really been doing much at all lately. I have tried to work on my personal work, including a new portfolio site, but I just don't think that I am motivated when I get home. But hopefully things will start picking up soon. Anyway that's all that I can think of now.

One Week Down

So last week was my first week at the new job. So far it has been really fun. I like Forthgear a lot and the people there are great. I have also learned a lot of new stuff that was never taught to me in school. I love doing all of the interactive/web stuff. Forthgear does things a little different than what I am used to though. They use tables in Dreamweaver to set-up their web sites and then use CSS to stylize them. I haven't used tables in a couple of years, so it is like I am learning this stuff all over again. Right now I am kinda slow at getting things done. But in the interviews I told them that it had been a while since I had worked with anything but Flash. That should give me a little slack on time-tables for jobs. Over all I think that the job is great. I just need to keep pushing ahead and learning what I need to in order to do my job.

New Job

So yesterday I was officially hired at Forthgear in Kaysville. So starting next Monday I will be working as an entry level Interactive Designer in a professional design firm. The pay is REALLY low compared to what others are making, but the guy there said that because they were in Davis county they paid a lot less than Salt Lake or Ogden. I figure that it is a job (and I really need a job) where I can grow my skills and gain some experience. And in the future I can move up there, or find a better opportunity somewhere else. Plus it is the first Interactive Design job that I have interviewed for and I like that side of design a lot better than print media. They do offer really good benefits as well so that is a good bonus and the people there seem very laid back and cool.

I guess all that I can really say is I am insanely happy to have found a Design job, even if it isn't exactly what I want.

So I finally got the sound issues figured out for my MP3 Player. It will now auto-play when you select a song and it will continue to the next song when a song finishes. The song order is also changeable by dragging the songs up or down the list. Now all I have to get figured out is the scrollable song list.

So I got the bugs in playing figured out at home last night. But now that I have loaded it up online it isn't working right anymore. Now it won't load the songs in right so I'm not sure what is going on. It also takesforever to load now which I can't figure out either. I'll have to keep working at it and see if I can figure it out. I still haven't figured out the scrolling song list yet though. So I put the new skin with the old ActionScript so that it would work until I get the other stuff figured out.

I did get my new skin figured out though. I'm not sure how well it is working, but I like it for now.

MP3 Player

I recently found a Flash Tutorial for a MP3 Player. So I took the .fla file that came along with the tutorial and started messing around with it to see if I could figure out how it worked without the help of the tutorial. For the looks I just changed the colors around from the original one. I will eventually make my own skin for the player that I have customized to look the way that I want it to, but for now I wanted to get all of the ActionScript figured out and working the way that I want it to. The player is now loaded on the right side of my blog underneath all of the links so if you are reading this then you should scroll down and check it out. All of the music is stuff that I put together so if you want to comment on it feel free to.

Most of the ActionScript that was used in the original player is still there, but I've modify it so that it ran a little better. There are still a lot of bugs that I need to work out though. One is the number of songs that I can display. The song list and MP3s are loaded in using XML. This is all pretty easy. My problem is that I can't figure out how to have the song list load into a scrolling box so that I can have a long list without having the list take up a lot of space. The other major problem that I am having is that the counter and progress bar won't fully reset when a new song is loaded. I changed the original ActionScript so that the song would play automatically when it is selected. For some reason this caused the counters to reset when the new song loaded, but then the counter and progress bar imediately go back to where they were set on the previous song. I can't figure out why it's doing this because if it's set-up to not auto-play then it doesn't have this problem. The only other problem that I am having right now is that when one song ends it won't automatically load in the next song on the list. I haven't tried to fix this one yet because I thought that the other two were more important, but I plan on getting it fixed as soon as I can.

If anyone reads this and thinks that they might have a solution to the problem I would appreciate any help that could be offered. Or any comments at all would be welcome.

The Job Hunt Continues

So I am getting really frustrated with employers and I need to have a little rant.
I have made it down to the final two candidates for a couple of jobs recently. But after the last interview I never hear back from them. And when I contact them they tell me that they are "still deciding". Which I think is code for "we offered the job to the other person and we're waiting to see if they accept it, but if they don't then we are planning on offering it to you, so we don't want to tell you that you didn't get the job." I keep applying every time that I hear about another design job opening up. I guess I just don't have enough good Kharma built up right now. Hopefully things turn better soon or I might go insane.

New Header

I decided that since I didn't have anything else going on today I would design a new Flash header for my blog. I wanted to keep the circles around from the previous header, but use them in a different way. I also introduced red into the mix to give it another layer of color. I'm not sure if I have made an improvement over the old header or not. I like the movement created in this one though so I will probably keep it for a little while.

Overwhelmed

Lately I have been feeling very overwhelmed by LIFE. I can't explain why exactly, but it just seems like the Universe is trying to make me go crazy and there is nothing I can do about it. It really sucks. Every time I feel like I am finally getting somewhere I manage to screw something up. Maybe I am just stressed form everything that is happening right now. I just can't figure it out. I have been sick for the last two weeks and I am starting to think that it is a big conspiracy of the Universe to screw with me. At first I just thought it was a cold in the middle of Summer. The longer it lasts though the more I think that something else has to be making me sick.

On another note... I was supposed to do a CD Flash intro for a program, but now it looks like all the work I did might not get used. I didn't finish the project yet, but what I did do is online here. The Flash file is really huge because I made it for a CD not the internet. So if you go check it out just let the page sit for a while and it will eventually load (the slower your connection the longer it will take).

Job Hunt

So I never thought that finding a job would be so difficult. I have applied all over Utah, as well as other states, and I have only heard back from two companies so far. It is just crazy.

Luckily I have made it down to the final two candidates at the Grand America Hotel, they call themselves 54-7. Now I have to meet with the "Big Wig" of the company for another interview. This will be the third one down there. The first two were pretty laid back and I had a good time. I'm not quite sure what to expect at this one.

The only other design job that I've heard back from is with Harmon Music Group. I have an interview set-up for next week there. That one is just in case the 54-7 job doesn't work out. Or if it will pay me more. I still don't know what the salary will be for 54-7 would be.

I have been trying to find freelance and contract work lately too. But no one has gotten back to me on any of that either. I don't know how people who only do freelance make any money. They must have connections all over in order to find enough jobs to keep the money coming in.

Big 25

So today is the big 25th birthday. I can't believe that I am a quarter of a century old already. Where does the time go? I don't feel any older today. I haven't really felt older since I turned 20 or 21. All the years just seem to merge together. I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

The weird thing is that today doesn't feel any different from any other day so far this summer. I'm online once again looking around the internet. And I don't really have any exciting plans for the rest of the day. It is kinda sad the more I think about it.

I guess that I always pictured my life a little different by the time I made it this far.

New blog look, same blog taste!

So I decided that I would update my blog today. I gave it a new look. The old one was just too dark for me right now. I added a little flare with a Flash animation to replace the title. I also changed some of the colors around.

I think that the new look is a lot more streamlined than the way it looked before. Plus I really love messing around with CSS and HTML so this is a good way to do it.

Upper Case Letters

So I've decided that since I don't really have anyone that looks at my blog on a regular basis that I am just going to write a bunch of random things whenever I get inspired.

This entry is on Upper Case Letters. I have decided that I don't really like them. They make things look a little weird when mixed in with lower case letters. Take the title of this post. There are three really big letters that don't match up with the rest of the lower case letters. I haven't decided yet if I want to totally stop using upper case letters, but I think I am going to start cutting back.
